He would DEFINITELY be the friend you go record shopping with, who you allow full artistic rights over the records you buy and those you don’t.

I already have those positions filled through my normal friend pool. But I do take speculative applications.

last 24 hours have been nothing but Garage. a history I only really caught the tail end of. through open white van windows and a couple of photocopy-and-MS Paint-your-passport club experiences. Only some people will get me on the latter.

I know it is a cliche to say that I feel I was born in the wrong ‘era’ (perhaps too strong a word. . . maybe ‘musical era’ . . . ) but when I listen to tunes such as the above. . . I really, really do feel sad that I never had the authentic experience.

I was never there when you first knew the songs by sound only. and not by track name, artist name, national insurance number and next of kin.

I buy my records from the ex-enthusiast on discogs who is selling to fund a pram or cot for his newborn. Or worse still, to re-laminate the kitchen floor.

It’s not very romantic.

I do my learning on youtube where immediately the experience of a new track can be soured by my lacklustre Virgin router, or some overly choice language in the comments. Although there is occasionally a positive side to this.

Of course, there are the odd lampost raves still going. In places like Acton. And Kilburn. But I don’t think I’ve ever met someone credible who has attended one and lived to tell the tale. This side of 2010 anyway. . .

I’m happy to be proven wrong on that though.

Anyway. i’m yakking. here is to Garage, and the feeling that I will never belong. even if I read all the books, buy all the records and learn all the dances.
